01 / About
Who I am
Lilja Sharifi

I started my career in customer service, but the days I found most interesting were always the ones spent figuring out why something wasn't working.

I now study IT infrastructure, cloud services and information security at Haaga-Helia, and I'm looking for my first role in the field. In my free time I play video games and spend time with my family and my turtle in the Helsinki region.

My motto in life is that you can't learn anything new if you think you already know everything.

Hands-on projects
This site — self-hosted on my own server
Not a course assignment: I provision and maintain liljasharifi.com myself on a Debian droplet on DigitalOcean. Apache as the web server, SSH access with ed25519 key pairs and root login disabled, HTTPS via a Let's Encrypt certificate, and DNS pointed at the droplet. Everything you are reading is served from a machine I administer.
Debian Apache DigitalOcean SSH Let's Encrypt DNS
Ansible automation fundamentals
SSH key-based login, user management and permission configuration with Ansible — first roles and package installation (apt, user, authorized_key, copy, file and service modules).
Ansible Linux SSH

Web server deployment & intrusion detection
Manual deployment of Apache and Nginx servers and permission management, plus automating the Nginx installation with Ansible, including resolving a symlink configuration issue. As a bonus I set up a Suricata IDS with Wazuh for alert collection and correlation (Osiris-T), and verified that the alerts fired using a simulated attack.

Intrusion prevention with Fail2Ban
Configuring Fail2Ban and the UFW firewall for SSH protection (jail rules, ban durations), automated with Ansible and verified as idempotent.

SSL/TLS certification and traffic security analysis
Obtained a Let's Encrypt SSL certificate for an Apache server with Certbot on my own domain and scored an A in the SSL Labs test. As a bonus I captured network traffic with Wireshark and demonstrated concretely how a username and password appear in cleartext in unencrypted HTTP traffic.

Cloud server deployment and domain setup
Rented a cloud server (UpCloud), enabled the UFW firewall, created a user account and disabled root login over SSH. Installed an Apache server and finally connected my own domain to the server with a DNS A record.
